Where is Australia’s GLAAD? A case for establishing an Australian LGBTIQA+ Media Institute to improve diversity in screen media representation

As screen studies scholars have noted over the past two decades, media representation is critical in being able to see oneself as important society. In 2016, Screen Australia released “Seeing Ourselves: Reflections on Diversity TV Drama” report diversity Australian drama. Ourselves” paints a picture of lack inclusive storytelling scripted TV, suggesting that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer, asexual and other sexuality- gender-diverse (LGBTIQA+) people were fact not seeing themselves—that was lacking diversity, inclusivity, authenticity complexity. This article presents case study GLAAD Media Institute similar international organisations imagines how advisory advocacy organisation could be established support practitioners students more LGBTIQA+ their stories. It highlights necessity for, benefit of, creating an independent replicate GLAAD’s three pillars training, consultation research improve current diversity—the ultimate goal this advocate for real sustained impact, just media, but our local communities society at large.
